An estimated 40,000 England fans were in Gelsenkirchen and nearby Essen and Dusseldorf for Sunday’s match, with around 300,000 expected to travel to Germany during the month-long tournament.

Among them were Mark Wright and Olly Murs, who embarked on an epic road trip to Germany to watch England play their first match.

The former TOWIE star, 37, and the singer, 40, woke up at 5am to take the journey all the way to the western city – meaning the singer missed his first Father’s Day.

They took to their social media to share the trip with their followers as they posted hilarious videos singing in the car and even thinking they had taken a wrong turn and were on the way to Amsterdam at one point.

Sharing a snap in his England shirt Mark penned in the caption to his grid post: ‘We made it!’

The pair also revealed they had made a new football remix of Olly’s hit Heart Skips a Beat – inserting footie puns and some of the famous players’ names.

They also stood for a snap together after the game as Mark wrote: ‘What a day!! Ended with a win!’

Naturally, the Beckhams tuned in to the game with Romeo, 21, sharing his reactions as he watched the match from home.

Sharing his support for the team ahead of the game, he wrote ‘come on boys’, before later adding ‘JUDDEEEEEEE’ when the midfielder scored.

Elsewhere, his footballing legend father David, 49, also shared his own post for the Lions and reflected on his past career.

Alongside a photo of himself as a child in a full England kit, he wrote: ‘Whether it was at home as a kid with a dream, or on the field as the captain of my country…

‘Wearing the England shirt made me feel so proud ❤️ Good luck to Gareth and the boys. Come on England.’

Also showing her support on Instagram was Bukayo Saka’s girlfriend Tolami Benson, who watched her boyfriend play from the stands.

Tolami looked stunning in a personalised leather jacket, which featured England badges and the word Lions embroidered down the arm.
